This is the year for director Steven Soderbergh ("Erin Brockovich"), not only does he have"Erin" as a box office draw, but "Traffic", too. "Traffic" is a harrowing tale of the drug trade from top government officials in the U.S. and Mexico on down the food chain to the street corner dealer. Soderbergh workswith an all star casting that includes Michael Douglas ("Wonder Boys"),Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Mask of Zorro"), Steven Bauer, Dennis Quaid ("Frequency"), newcomer Erika Christensen, Benicio Del Toro, Don Cheadle ("Mission to Mars") and Miguel Ferrer.
The plot of "Traffic" is three stories going on at the same time. Douglas is the newly appointed American crime supervisor who goes after drug dealers without knowing his daughter (Erika) is an addict. South of the border, Del Toro and Cheadleare cops who try to keep it honest while all is dishonest around them. Then there is Catherine, who is the pregnant wife of Bauer. When he is arrested, this socialite finds out where he gets his money from and decides to keep the family name intact by going into the business for herself. It is a vicious circle. Where there is money there are drugs and where there are drugs there is money.
Soderbergh, who is the cinematographer also, keeps the pace moving and the story lines in order with the help of washed out colors for Mexico and blue tints for Douglas’ office, for example. The performances are top-notch including Douglas who doesn’t know how to cope with his drug-addicted daughter, or Zeta-Jones as she decides to take over the family business. However, it is Benicio Del Toro who rises to the occasion with a precise depiction of a cop who knows the drug war can’t be won and is just trying to help the casualties. If you think you are seeing things, you aren’t, real life politicians Orrin Hatch, Barbara Boxer, Don Nickles and Harry Reed play themselves when Douglas attends a party and tries to discuss politics.
"Traffic" is a riveting film that doesn’t ask questions. It assumes you know the drug war is a long one and perhaps, won’t be won. Every time you take someone out, there is a replacement that is smarter and tougher. People do drugs for different reason, not the least of which are boredom, too much time on their hands, and a body chemistry that melts into stupefaction at one sniff. This film won a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe award for Benicio Del Toro’s performance.
Be aware of intense scenes of drug use, sexual situations, intense violence, deaths and torture.
