"U-571" has Matthew McConaughey ("edTV") is part of a submarine team who go after a disabled German U-boat that just happens to have an invaluable code book on it. What you say? Yes, it’s true, at least for this film. Actually, British sailors got the Enigma Code from a disabled sub, but then this is Hollywood, so there must be star-power action involved.
As the story here goes, during a sea battle, the German sub sinks an Allied ship, but is damaged. While the sub sits on the surface waiting for German rescue, the Americans get wind of it and send their own sub to claim the codebook. During another battle the American sub sinks, and the American crew have to commandeer the German sub to get home. Got all that?
As you can imagine, in the close confines of a submarine, one has to keep one’s emotions in check, but Matthew McConaughey finds out all sorts of things as to why he hasn’t advanced further in the Navy, such as not having command ability. Other members of the crew are Bill Paxton, Jack Noseworthy, Harvey Keitel, David Keith and Jon Bon Jovi.
What happens when the Allies try to sink this "German" sub? How to even make the thing go when everything is printed in German. Ach, it makes for a worrisome situation. "U-571" is a totally improbably plot, but somehow you go along with it because it is action-packed, fairly good acting and a plot twist or two to keep you guessing., not to mention the claustrophobic feeling from being aboard a sub. Director Jonathan Mostow has a firm hand at the helm. Rated R for graphic war violence and profanity. Copyright 2000 Marie Asner
