URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT        1

    How many ways can you persuade a young woman to go into dark and
mysterious, not to mention downright dangerous places, alone?  You can't have
a horror film without it, so stop muttering to yourself, it won't do any
good.  "Urban Legends: Final Cut" does it again.  Sigh.  The first "Urban
Legends" poked fun at any number of things like the mysterious hitchhiker. 
Even so, it turned in to a typical maniacal-murderer-on-the-loose film that
was a showcase for new talent (Joshua Jackson and Jared Leto).  "Urban
Legends: Final Cut" goes further down the road, but it's downhill all the
way.  Director John Ottman works from a script by Paul Harris Boardman and
Scott Derrickson.  It must have been a challenge.

    As the story goes, Jennifer Morrison is in film school and wants to do
her thesis about a serial killer who murders on the urban legends premise. 
She has to contend with the usual group of students who work with her or
against her. There is also the annual Hitchcock Prize to win.  The jealous
streak can produce monstrous results.  When people start dying, as the group
works a film-within-a-film, the line of suspects is intriguing.  From
previous films, you can guess that the guilty party is the one with a smile
while the rest consistently look guilty.   Hart Bochner is here and it wasn't
long ago that he was portraying a student in films such as this.  Others in
the cast are Matthew Davis, Joseph Lawrence (remember when he was "Joey"
Lawrence?), Anson Mount, Anthony Anderson, Eva Mendes, Jessica Cauffiel and
Loretta Devine (from the first "Urban Legends") who is once again a security
guard.

    "Urban Legends: Final Cut" is (excuse the pun) a cut below horror films. 
There are a few moments of humor with Devine or the special effects guys who
make fun of George Lucas.  The killer wears something like a fencing mask. 
Guess the costume department must have run out of hockey or leather masks. 
Acting, with the exception of "seasoned" actors like Bochner, is barely
average.  All that is needed is a screaming voice, ability to run or stand
and avoid looking in dark places because someone is creeping up on
you.   I wonder if the third installment (if there is one) will be
called "Urban Legends: Last Slice" or "Urban Legends: Bury the Hatchet?"

    Be aware of profanity, violence and sexual scenes.
