THE LITTLE VAMPIRE
2
Rated PG
Website: www.LittleVampireMovie.com
"The Little Vampire" has positive things going for it. It has good child actors (Jonathan Lipnicki from "Stuart Little") and British actor Rollo Weeks Adult actors are Richard E. Grant ("Portrait of a Lady") and Alice Krige ("StarTrek: First Contact"). However, right off the bat (excuse the pun), I have a problem with a vampire film involving children. The idea of reducing a child to a blood-lapping individual—even though the givers are cows in this film—is unsettling. "The Little Vampire" is adapted for the screen by Karey Kirkpatrick and Larry Wilson from the book of the same name authored by Angela Sommer-Bodenburg. Director is Uli Edel ("Body of Evidence").
The story has Jonathan accompanying his parents to Scotland where his father is building a golf course. One night, Jonathan has a visitor in his room and it is Rudolph, a child vampire (Weeks) who is lonely. His vampire family wants to be human again but can only do so if they find a certain amulet before a certain comet appears in the sky. The search is on for the amulet and to protect Rudolph from sunlight (he hides in a footlocker) and the usual vampire-hunter, here portrayed with relish by Jim Carter ("Shakespeare in Love.") In the meantime, Jonathan has to contend with school bullies, but having a friend like Rudolph helps matters considerably. Will the vampires get the amulet in time? Oh, by the way, there are also vampire cows to be wary of. Milking time for farmers would have to be a stressful time at these farms.
"The Little Vampire" has good special effects and the acting is fairly well done. Adults can overact all they want and it is within the context of a vampire film. Carter’s vampire hunting truck looks like leftovers from "Inspector Gadget." This guy is here for the long haul. However, now we are back to the idea of a vampire film for children. There are children in peril here such as being locked in a crypt, the usual stake through the heart idea, a rather macabre atmosphere and talk of the "undead." This film would be appropriate for children age 10 and above and adults of the horror film ilk. Why do people like horror films? Try escapism—there is always someone (or something) worse off than you are, like having fangs, no French fries and hanging around (there go those puns again) for 300 years or more avoiding sunlight.
Be aware of mild violence and theme of the vampire society.
