VANILLA SKY                1

      “Vanilla Sky,” the heady confection directed by Cameron Crowe (“Almost Famous”) is a confusing film.  Nothing is what it appears. That, in itself, is not bothersome, but tossing so many red herrings through the film confuses the audience and ultimately is the movie’s downfall.  Tom Cruise is the star and he plays a STAR.  A man with so much money and charisma, the sun dims in comparison with him. On the other hand, anyone else in “Vanilla Sky” might as well collect their paycheck and go home, Penelope Cruz, included.   Cruise does well in the part, but because of the role, when he is “on,” you can feel it.  Cameron Diaz dazzles, but her screen time is sparse and Jason Lee is effective, but he, too, has little screen time.  Penelope Cruz played the same role in the Spanish film, “Open Your Eyes” (by writer/director Alejandro Amenabar who also did Nicole Kidman’s film, “The Others”) I suspect Cruz captivated the audience there, but only serves as window dressing here.

           The story would seem to be that Cruise is a handsome, playboy executive who doesn’t fear anything but heights.  He has a different girl every week, except Cameron Diaz claims him as her own (think “Fatal Attraction”).  Jason Lee plays his best friend who really does stick with him through thick and thin.  When Cruise meets Cruz, he believes she is THE girl for him.  She, however, has doubts about his sincerity.  It is here that the plot thickens to the consistency of glue.  Cruise is involved in a deadly auto accident with Diaz and his face and body are disfigured.  Did he dream this or not?  Does he have facial surgery or not?  Is this a conspiracy plot by the other men in his corporation? Did the audience fall asleep and have a collective nightmare?  That’s how I felt when I left the theater.

           “Vanilla Sky” is a cinematic puzzle that runs over two hours.  It is visually effective in spots.  In one, Cruise wears a latex mask to hide his face and walks through a nightclub with the mask on the back of his head. At this point, he probably didn’t know what was going on, either.  “The Sixth Sense” and “The Others” lead you down the garden path with endings that made you think. “Vanilla Sky” would have made a good 60-minute episode of television’s “Outer Limits.”  At least 20 minutes of the film could have been cut.  How many close-ups of Cruise do you need?  How many scenes of him trying to explain what he thinks is happening?  How many scenes of Cruz tossing her hair around and looking pensive?   My recommendation is to take a note pad and pencil to the theater and keep track of what you think is going on.  If you get bored, you can always write a letter to someone.
