    "The Vertical Limit" does for mountain climbing what "The Perfect Storm"
did for seafaring folk.  When you encounter something larger than life, be
aware.  "The Vertical Limit" is set against the backdrop of the second
highest mountain in the world, K2.  The IMAX film, "Everest," took audiences
into the nether regions with breathtaking vistas of high altitude mountain
ranges.  "The Vertical Limit" offers much the same, and a story to boot.  By
the way, the term, "vertical limit" refers to the limit of high altitude
endurance the human body can stand and it's usually above 20,000 feet.

    The film stars Chris O'Donnell ("The Bachelor") and Robin Tunney ("End of
Days") as brother and sister mountain climbers.  Because of a terrible
accident involving them and their father, the two have parted ways.  Chris is
now a nature photographer, but Robin is now the best female climber in the
world.  She is part of a glamour expedition on K2 when an accident traps
Robin and other climbers, Bill Paxton ("Twister") and Nicholas Lea
(television's "The X-Files") in a crevasse and  they have days to live. 
Chris goes on the rescue attempt headed by Scott Glenn ("Courage Under Fire")
and Izabella Scorupco ("Goldeneye.")  If there weren't enough danger in
climbing a forsaken peak, the group takes nitroglycerin along to blow up
obstacles.  Will the rescue team reach the stranded climbers in time?  Just
how unstable is nitro, anyway?  What about the helicopter pilot (Temuera
Morrison) or the guide (Alexander Siddig)?  Are they courageous, too?  Better
yet, does the audience have endurance to sit through hair-raising adventures?
 You bet, and don't miss the beginning of the film.

    "The Vertical Limit" will keep you on the edge of your seat in.  Not only
that, but you will be wrapping your jacket around you in empathy with the
climbers.  Photography by David Tattersall ("The Phantom Menace") is
mesmerizing.  The film will remind you of Stallone's "Cliffhanger" and even
the older Clint Eastwood movie, "The Eiger Sanction."  Both films had
hair-raising mountain adventures.  The acting is fairly well done with
O'Donnell coming into his own with a dramatic role and Scott Glenn, as a
crusty character, steals all his scenes.  Paxton does a self-serving
individual well, and Izabella Scorupco is fairly good as the female climber
who is tough on the mountain.  Director Martin Campbell ("The Mark of Zorro")
pulled it all together

    Be aware of  strong language and life and death situations and decisions.
