THE WATCHER     1   1/2
    Rated R
Website:    www.TheWatcherMovie.com

"The Watcher" is a serial killer movie starring Keanu Reeves ("The
Replacements") and James Spader  (remember the "Stargate" movie?).  Reeves is
the killer and Spader the detective.  Ho hum.  Joe Charbanic directs and this
film has more wooden performances than a marionette show.  Marisa Tomei
(remember her from "My Cousin Vinnie") plays a therapist.   David Elliott and
Clay Ayers wrote the script and it is formula all the way.

The story has Spader and Reeves tangling as detective and killer in Los
Angeles.  Spader never caught the killer and suffered mental exhaustion, so
moved to Chicago.  Well, Reeves, who lives for the game, needs his ego kept
alive, so follows Spader to the Windy City and starts dispatching women right
and left.  His MO is strangling with piano wire. In order to get the
attention of the police, Reeves starts sending photos of his intended
victims.  Find this person within 24 hours or she dies.  Spader, who by now
is counseling with Tomei, recognizes the pattern of the killer, but how to
catch the guy?  Brainy detective work not being on everyone's agenda here.
Spader also has to deal with horrible headaches.  Can't blame smog for that.

Others have wondered if changing the cast would have helped the film.
How about Reeves and his wooden style of acting, being the detective and
Spader the killer?  I say, how about Tomei being the killer dispatching men
and/or women, and Spader being the detective with no-expression Reeves as the
therapist?  Instead of women being lonely and vulnerable, men could be naive
when a woman smiles at them.

"The Watcher" ends up being a serial killer movie that has a killer
preying on women, a detective who can't catch the killer, and a therapist who
wears the same expression. There are shootings and chases.  Can't have a
serial killer film without that.  Cinematography by Michael Chapman is
handled adequately and there are scares here.  The cop and the killer need
each other in this sick game of  "catch."  "The Cell" tried to physically get
into the mind of a serial killer.  "The Watcher" stands on the outside and
watches. There is something that we do get from the film and that is we are a
nonobservant society.  A serial killer could be right under our noses and no
one could ferret them out., even Keanu Reeves.   Also, when a scene screams,
"it means something," there must be candlelight. It may come to mean lullaby
time for the audience.

Be aware of violence, profanity and sexual references.
