“What Women
Want” is the title of Mel Gibson’s (“The Patriot”) latest film. Let’s
face it, women want Mel. In this film, he can read
women’s minds and what he discovers isn’t pleasing to the male ego.
Mel’s costar is Helen Hunt (“Pay It Forward”) as a female boss who doesn’t
mingle with employees. Others in the cast are Alan Alda, Mark Feuerstein,
Lauren Holly, Valerie Perrine and Delta Burke. The clever script is
by Josh Goldsmith, Cathy Yuspa and Diane Drake and directed by Nancy Meyers
(“The Parent Trap.”)
In the
film, Mel just plain plays a jerk. He’s divorced and doesn’t see his
teenage daughter (Ashley Johnson). He thinks life is a bowl
of cherries until he is nearly electrocuted in his apartment. Recovering,
Mel discovers he can read women’s minds. Is this a delight or what?
It
turns out not. Mel finds out he is less than perfect, in fact, way less
than perfect in women’s eyes. He decides to do something about it by
becoming “sensitive” and starts with his boss (Hunt.) Can he win her
over? What do you think?
“What Women
Want” has witty dialogue and with Gibson’s good looks and screen charisma,
the role fits him like a glove. Hunt gives a
sparkling performance as the woman who tries to keep emotion out of the work
place and finds just how difficult it is. Oh, yes, watch for Marisa
Tomei (“My Cousin Vinny”) as a coffee shop waitress who wants to be an actress. Holly
is Mel’s ex-wife, while Burke and Perrine are his doting secretaries. This
guy really does live in a world of women, except for the owner of his ad agency,
Alan Alda. Almost forgot, watch for Bette Midler in a cameo.
Of course,
with any story with business relationships you have offices only found in
magazines and apartments to dream about. The film is set in Chicago.
The ending could use reworking. “What Women Want” continues in
a string of films with endings that could use serious revision (reference:
“Unbreakable” or “The 6th Day.”) Gibson walks through the film with
spirit and it’s a far cry from the battlefield scenes of “The
Patriot.” Hunt holds her own against the Gibson whirlwind.
Be aware of sexual scenes and sexually toned language that teeters on an “R”
rating, though the film is “PG13.”
